Friday Thoughts: Midsummer Survival
Welcome to the middle of summer! HOW ARE WE DOING?
I feel like one either approaches summer like “fave season! no schedule! bring it on!” or “send prayers! still have to work! need structure!” Ok, perhaps I’m over simplifying it…but I would love to know where you fit on that spectrum.
I was debating whether or not to even do a Friday Thoughts post, but I recently ran into a few people I didn’t know (at a wedding!) who read my blog, and they both mentioned how much they enjoy reading these posts. Since I also like getting a real-life glimpse into other people’s lives, I decided to throw one together.
In this post, I’m pretty much just chatting about all.the.things and wishing, as always, we had a way to smoosh this corner of the internet into my kitchen so we could all be communing around my counter, eating cookies and solving all of life’s questions.
If you’re here just for the recipes, no worries! Monday I have a fabulous new light and delicious dinner recipe coming that I’ve been eating on repeat.
Homecoming + Cold Plunge
We welcomed my son, Walker, home from his 2-year church mission to the Philippines. I couldn’t stop exclaiming over him at the airport. I just couldn’t believe that after two years, he was right there! It was kind of surreal, and so, so fun. It was just our little family at the airport (totally his non-attention, lowkey style), but we did get to video in his older brother in Utah and his younger brother in New Zealand while waiting for his luggage.
We escaped for a few days up to the mountains right after he got home. Literally did nothing other than hang out, listen to my boys play lots of guitar around the fire, surf behind the boat (not me 😜), fish (again, not me), eat lots of good food, and paddleboard around the lake.
The airbnb we stayed at had a sauna, so I had this brilliant idea to do a sauna/cold plunge challenge one morning. My mom was there and caught it all on video (my 72-year old dad did it with me). I was so excited to watch the video because I couldn’t wait to see myself looking like an absolute formidable athlete running down the hill post-sauna to the freezing lake to dive in. Um, yeah, not so much. Instead I looked like a lumbering polar bear screeching it’s guts out and pinching it’s nose to ungracefully belly flop in the water. Ah, middle age humility. It’s my constant companion these days.
While my son loved the food in the Philippines, he can’t get enough of his favorite foods here since he’s been home. I’ve been eagerly asking him what he wants me to make, because a) food is my love language and b) he has announced he wants to bulk up. I have never taken a responsibility so seriously; I was born for this. 😜💪🏼
Here are a few of his favorite recipes I’ve made him so far:
- Cinnamon rolls
- Homemade pizza rolls
- Rollup pancakes
- Crispy baked shrimp tacos
- Bagel bread (this was top of his list!)
- Egg roll skillet meal
- Our go-to freezer bean burritos
- Breadsticks
- Homemade pizza
- Hawaiian haystacks
Games + Puzzles We Are Loving
We keep several games out at our kitchen table all summer long. They aren’t always the same – we rotate through them. But keeping them downstairs means we play them a lot more than if someone has to trek *all the way up* to the game closet.
- Brian and my daughter have been playing this one nonstop. She bought it for Brian for Father’s Day, and it has been a clever, fun 2-person game. They also love playing old school Mastermind together.
- This is another great 2-person (or more!) game that is out right now. We play it a lot because it is quick, easy-to-learn, and fun (also: frustrating!!).
- My parents have had one of these games sitting on their coffee table for decades. Someone is always tinkering with it when we’re sitting around chatting in their living room. I finally got our family one to keep around!
- I’ve bought this active game for two nephews’ birthdays the last month or so, and it has been an instant hit. My sister texted me the evening of my nephew’s birthday saying he had been outside playing with it for hours.
- I keep a puzzle up pretty much all summer. We’ve done several Spaghetti Tree puzzles and love them! This USA one was especially fun.
Any games you are loving to recommend? Comment below and let me know! I love getting new game recommendations.
AI and Blogging
Hmmm, this might be a longer discussion for a different time and audience (😅), but it’s worth bringing up simply because it effects my daily life as a food blogger…and will definitely impact for how long (and whether or not) I have a food blog in the future.
Basically, as we know, AI is everywhere. And it definitely isn’t all bad (I use it frequently in my own life!). But when it comes to a food blog, like mine, the impact has been profound.
Over the years, I have greatly benefitted from search traffic. My blog and recipes have ranked really well in Google and other search engines, which has been awesome and so beneficial to me and my business!
However, AI search mode/results, along with ChatGPT (and other chatbots), have had a significant and serious impact on search traffic for websites like mine, because they give answers and recipes (untested recipes, usually) in nanoseconds to people without sending them to actual websites.
When search traffic and clicks go down, so does revenue. And while I certainly don’t blog just for the money, this is a full-time business, and I have a lot of operating costs to maintain (as well as the fact that my business financially supports my family while my husband is growing his own business).

I’ve had endless discussions with fellow food blogging friends and my husband about what the future holds. The truth is: none of us really know.
While the pendulum feels like it is swinging far, far over the side of relying on AI completely, my hopes is that with time, people will come to realize they actually do value a real human voice and trusted, tested recipes and the pendulum will swing back toward the center a little bit.
But it may not. And if it takes too long, I sometimes wonder if I’ll have “aged out” of blogging completely?
Anyway, you don’t need a sob story (despite the fact that thinking of NOT connecting with you in this space actually does make me want to cry), but the impact of AI on food bloggers is real and very uncertain. If you’ve been on Pinterest lately and seen the AI slop that has taken over that platform, that will give you an indication of what AI is doing to the industry as a whole. It kind of makes me sick (especially when I realize people aren’t able to discern what is AI and what is real).
On the positive side, I am so appreciative of all of you who comment here. Who click on actual links and rely on the trusted recipes that I test over and over. Who take the time to leave reviews on recipes (doing so gives a decidedly *human* aspect to my website!). Who subscribe to my email list. And who reach out to let me know that you appreciate the recipes and content. I know life is busy, so thank you.
I’ve been food blogging for nearly 20 years. A lot has changed. And while I certainly haven’t seen anything quite like what AI is doing to the internet right now, I have weathered other internet/technical storms in the past as things have evolved and changed. Hopefully there is a way forward so I can continue to share my favorite recipes with all of you.
It means so, so much to me that you are here. I can’t say that enough. 💗
A Few Extra Things
And now, let’s end things on a better, more lighthearted note!
- I mentioned this on Instagram, but recently Jennifer Garner was on a podcast and when asked who her favorite food blogger is, she mentioned my name. Yes, I about fell over. Yes, I was super flattered. Yes, I thought she must surely be talking about another “Mel’s Kitchen Cafe.” And then Elin Hilderbrand (author and host of the podcast) sent me a DM saying she started following my blog. Of course, I used both as a flex to my family that night at dinner…except it turns out that none of them were really all that impressed (made clear when they asked, “who are those people?”) 😜 #keepingmehumble
- On a completely unrelated note, I used these best-ever ice cream scoops to help scoop hundreds of ice cream sundaes for a wedding reception this weekend. They’re inexpensive and really great (plus, hello, so many cute colors).
- This is the cutest shirt. I sized up because the underarm area is a little snug, but it’s super lightweight and adorable.
- I’m all about homemade granola when it works out, but this dark chocolate coconut LoveCrunch granola might need to be a forever-staple in my pantry (also loving their Dubai-flavored granola that I found at Ross of all places!).
- I’m slowly gathering items to send with my son when he heads off to college (for the first time) this fall. I’ll try to keep track of a list of what we get him and what ends up working well (and what doesn’t!). I’m printing off this packet to send with him (and hoping he’ll want to do a little cooking before he goes since he wasn’t super interested when he was in high school, but if you’ve parented young adult kids, you understand how well some of those suggestions go over 👀).
- I am still eating these overnight oats on repeat. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve had them every morning without fail for over four months. I’ve started making them in individual-size containers for days when I’ll be out and about and also because a few in my family have started eating them, too, and it makes it easier for them to grab in the early morning before work. I use these containers which are perfect for the oats + toppings. Here are the measurements I use for each individual portion: 45 grams rolled oats, 22 grams chia seeds/basil seeds/or a combo, one scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder, pinch of salt, a scant 1 cup almond milk.
I’ve been cooking and recipe testing up a storm on some free days this summer, and I am so very excited about the recipes that will be hitting the blog over the next few months!
Well, that’s a wrap! The rest of our summer is pretty laid back. We’re home for the most part other than a quick trip to Utah for a niece’s wedding. School starts in less than four weeks!
I hope you are having a great summer! I’d love to hear any and everything you want to share below. Thank you so much for being here!
I love this picture above ⬆️ My oldest son with his two grandmothers. I’m blessed to have those three in my life!
I sincerely hope that you will not be forced out of the blogging community! I love your recipes and have enjoyed getting to know you and your family through your posts.
Whenever I make a new recipe, my husband now just immediately asks, “is this a Mel’s recipe?”😄 Because I am always trying out something of yours!
Thank you for sharing your time and your talents with us! And welcome home to your son! I have a son serving in Anaheim right now so I know how you feel. It’s so hard to have them gone, but such a great experience for them also. I would not want to take that away from them.
Thank you again!
Don’t go anywhere, Mel! I spend way too much time on your site. I’ve got my young adult daughters checking first with you for recipes and I just printed out your mini cookbook to send with my son on his mission. Please keep going.
I love, love your game suggestions. Here is one for you The Crew: Mission Deep Sea. My husband, 18 year old son, and I have been playing a couple of rounds every night all summer. It is nice to have my son’s brain working with me and not against me (middle age humility is right!).
Thanks for all the good food, great games, and virtual friendship through the last almost 20 years.
Mel, I began following your blog 7 years ago when Jennifer Garner made your bagel recipe on her Pretend Cooking Show. So happy she continues to shout you out to her many fans! You are my primary source for recipes and they are all so delicious. Many thanks.
I hadn’t thought about how AI affects food bloggers. Hoping you manage to keep going! I adore your recipes and your life sharing. And I am not surprised your blog is a fav of Jennifer Garner’s!
If Mels Kitchen Cafe were to ever go away, I would literally die!!! I have been following and relying on your recipes for the last 10 years!!!
Mel, I love your Friday thoughts! It’s so fun to get an insight into your life besides cooking!
I’m so glad your son came home from the Philippines! What a joyous day! 😍
Congrats on Jennifer Garner saying you were her favorite blogger! You’re definitely mine, too, even though I’m a “nobody”! 😅
I can’t believe summer is winding down! I’m a school teacher and I go back in just over 2 weeks! But, it’s been a great summer other than the incredible heat and humidity!
Good luck getting your son off to college here in Utah and enjoy the rest of your summer!
I’m so glad you shared this about AI! I had no idea and will double my efforts to lead people to your actual website! At least once a week I tell someone, “Mel’s Kitchen never lets me down.” Our family loves it all and I look forward to every recipe AND every post. ❤️
Quick question… what brand are the cropped pants you have on in the pic at the airport? Thank you!
Thank you for being my go-to recipe bank for the last decade-plus! I hate to hear about the impact of AI on food blogging in general, but especially your blog. As others have mentioned, if you find out anything that we, your loyal followers, can do to try to counteract the impact and support your blog, please share it with us!
We are sending our oldest (daughter) to college this fall and the amount of STUFF we have bought to set her up is insane. I’d love to hear what all you are getting for your son! And will definitely be printing out that guide for beginners. We’ve been having her choose, plan, and cook dinner 2 nights a week this summer. It’s been very eye opening for her, I think! Heaven help these amazing young adults and their over-bearing, annoying, but full-of-love mothers! 😆
Whenever I’m searching online for a recipe, I always put “Mel’s” in front of whatever I’m looking for. Like “Mel’s enchiladas” or “Mel’s banana muffins.” I don’t even bother looking anywhere else! Hopefully my clicks are helping!
Our entire family just loves you and count on you for every occasion and meal or treat. We have all followed you for over 20 years. Whenever anyone makes anything and asks for the recipe it is always – Mel’s kitchen cafe. We all love your book as well. Keep up the wonderful work you do. It is very appreciated.
Love this update, and your recipes. That is wild to me that people use AI rather than an actual tested recipe. I’m so sorry for this phase of food blogging. Also getting ready to send a boy to college, any other tips for that are very welcome!
Can’t stop, won’t stop coming to your site for all of our favorites! I make your overnight oats every week. In addition to so many other meals from your recipes. AI can’t replace real connection over recipes and life. I’ll be coming back as long as you do because you’re the best!
Ps I was super excited about the celebrity shout outs for you! Maybe because I’m pushing 50, but I know who both those women are and thought it was so cool!!
Just wanted to say I love these posts, and your recipes/site!
Is there anything more we can do to help you beat AI? Clicking and commenting more? My whole family knows that you are one of my closest friends (who doesn’t know me 😂). We love you and your recipes so much, you have been a major part of our family for 14 years. We will do whatever we can to help!
I love your blog and use it daily!!!! When people ask for a recipe I always say Mel’s Kitchen Cafe! I hope AI does not take over!!! Real people are so much better!!!! Thanks for all you do!
I’m so happy you’re here in this food blogging, real life space! Your recipes are my absolute favorite to feed my family, and I love hearing about your life as you are a few years ahead of me, raising a big family too. Thank you, Mel!
I love you Friday Thoughts. They make me feel like we are friends (which we should be – I’m in Idaho too, but the other side of the state). I use your recipes at least a few times a week and everyone in my house loves and trusts them. Your cookbook is out so often or we pull up a recipe on your blog (I print them because I am a paper kind of gal and my kids like to look through things to help pick meals) I know so many friends who use them and anytime I bring something to a gathering I’ll have friends ask “is this a Mel recipe?” I know that’s my preference over AI.
I love seeing things about your family and missionaries. My kids are still pretty young, but it’s encouraging to see great examples in the rising generation.
This summer has been rough – my amazing dad unexpectedly passed away and grief has been overwhelming at times.
Keep posting! I love it.
I like AI for a variety of reasons but the impact it has on true creators like you makes me sad. I’m glad I found you so many years ago because you are my number one source for all recipes. I always check out the recipes you send through email and on instagram and have found so many great ones from the weekly meal plan you send out. I don’t know what I would do without you and your recipes! I tell everyone I know to check out your recipes and I sometimes even throw in that Jennifer Garner follows you just so they know what a good recommendation I’m making 😊
There is not enough time in the day to waste on an untested recipe!! I would always go tried and true. I hope you are getting some good guidance on optimizing your website and posts to adapt to AI. Love your website and all you do! ❤️
Congratulations on the return of your son from the Philippines. (My daughter went there as well.) There’s nothing like that hug after a long absence.
There are certain of your recipes that I make on repeat (Korean Beef Bowls, for example). I thought about saving that one in my electronic cookbook, but now that I know what a difference searching and clicking makes, I will keep doing that.
I, for one, am sick of AI-written stuff. It’s becoming so obvious, and it turns me off. Thanks for being willing to just be you.
Happy Friday from Chihuahua Mexico! And if you’re kids weren’t impressed by your celebrity shout outs… I am! So cool! I used to follow a lot (like A LOT!) of food/recipe bloggers, but have phased them all out over time, but will always continue to follow you. Your recipes are so yummy and so real! They are my go to on a regular basis when I do the “what am I gonna make?” thing, where its a treat, snack or meal. I always find something that ends up being a hit! So thank you! Don’t give up and don’t let this AI thing discourage you! Your efforts and work are invaluable to me!
I literally started following you while in college (and I graduated 13 years ago!) MKC is always one of my go to’s for recipes! My family and I love you and your recipes! It’s been so fun watching your family grow up!
Mel, reading this post gave me “You’ve Got Mail” vibes. I think we need to “Picket the big bad chain store,” in your case AI. I don’t even use a search engine to find recipes. I just go directly to you or Sara’s sites. You guys are my go to’s and my girls will eat anything that is from Mel—even your overnight oats!! Don’t lose hope!! You’re so authentically witty and charming. You are always a breath of fresh air in all you do!! So we’ll all keep fighting for you!! I told my husband the other night that your writing is like reading an Emma M. Lion book food style!! My family LOVES all your recipes and your game list is always a hit!! Every Christmas we do a family “name drawing game drawing” and without fail, we use your list and have loved all your games!! We know if it’s from Mel, it’s going to be a keeper. Keep being your wonderful, authentic, genuine, darling self! The world is going to need you more and more because of you’re extraordinary!! Much love to you and your beautiful family!!
I really hope you will be able to continue blogging. Your recipes are my family’s style of cooking and eating. I know anything I make from your site will be a hit!
I used to go to Pinterest to search for recipe ideas, but it all looks so fake now! Since I discovered your site, Mel, I dropped Pinterest and come straight to you! You have the best recipes! Thank you for what you do. Your work makes my life better!
I also love your Friday thoughts post! I am so sorry about the AI stuff. I would never trust AI to use a recipe. I am a sewist and quilter and it has made a huge impact on patterns especially on Etsy. I did find out there is a setting on Pinterest you can change with AI. I saw it on a reel. 😂 The shout out from Jennifer Garner is huge! She is my absolute favorite!! That is so exciting! Have you ever considered doing a paid subscription of some kind like Patreon? I would gladly pay it!! I bought four of your cookbooks, but would gladly support you financially for all of the benefits I have received over the years.
I second this (the part about a paid subscription). You are my *go-to* food blogger and have been for at least ten years! My kids have a vague sense of who Betty Crocker is, but they KNOW Mel 😅 when it is my son’s turn to make supper, he pulls out your cookbook. Your recipes are a part of our family culture now! I have so appreciated that you have offered everything for free over the years but as the online landscape changes these days, I would be willing to pay.
Third this! I’d would happily pay a monthly subscription if it helps you keep blogging! Like so many others have said, your recipes are part of our family culture. Love you, Mel!
Can AI give us this empathetic and confidence-boosting prompt – “Now, here’s the part that I understand may cause some of you a bit of stress. You’re going to do something that you’ve probably been told to never do in the history of ever! You are going to seriously mess with a perfectly risen loaf of bread and turn it out of the pan into your hand (to be placed into the boiling water).
Take a deep breath. You’ve got this.” ?
NOPE!
Enjoy your day and thanks for sharing another edition of Friday Thoughts – my game shelves (at my house and many relatives!) are filled with your suggestions (they were all my fantastic gift ideas 😉 shhh)
Patricia
Mel, I love reading your blog. I look forward to getting recipe inspiration every time I see an email from you. If I need a recipe, I check out your website first. AI has it’s place but we still need to connect on a human level. Thank you for all you do!
I love your Friday Thoughts posts! I rarely comment, but I’m going to make more of an effort because I’m so grateful for your recipes! First, the berry bake looks incredible. Second, nice flex with Jennifer Gardner and Elin Hilderbrand, I’d be excited too!
I’m sorry about all the AI stress. It makes me sad, and it’s changing so much. I also hope that the pendulum swings back, but I guess we’ll see. My husband works in tech(software engineering), he started a new job about 18 months ago, and six months into the job, his role had completely changed due to AI. Things keep shifting, and it can be stressful. But I would imagine it’s more stressful owning your own business, with fluctuations in income. Will it help to comment more on your posts? I can imagine not having your blog as a resource. 🥺
In regards to AI, maybe a pivot is needed. I can see where blogs may not get as much traffic now with the AI and search engine impact, but there are still a lot of people that are looking for the person behind the recipes. I think it’s a lot more social media for that aspect though. So more posting on Facebook, Instagram, tiktok, and then people will get your recipes from there. I have been following you for a long time, but some newer people I found through social media not directly through their blog/website.
So I also use ai for many things but NOT for recipes it just can’t be trusted! It’s suggestions are always off and even if it improves over time Mel’s will always be one trillion times more reliable we’re here to stay! Signed one of your blog followers from the very beginning…you single handedly taught me to cook 20 years ago and forever saved my family from the unfortunate alternative 😆
I rarely have time to comment on recipes (I have 10 kids) but I use your website all the time. My daughters have even requested I buy your cookbook for them because they will want it when they are older🙂. Whenever I make a new recipe to take somewhere and someone asks where I got the recipe and I tell them. They say I should have known you’d say Mel’s 😅 I rarely look on any other website for recipes because I know yours usually turn out for me and the other ones use ingredients I don’t have on hand and definitely aren’t as good! I even have a binder of all the recipes I’ve printed from your site.Sooo many good ones!
Love these Friday Thoughts posts! Makes me feel like I’m not the only crazy mom out here.
I am usually not a commenter, but I will start now, because I am not an AI fan at all! Here’s hoping that pendulum swings back soon! 💜
This is the first blog of yours I’ve read, although I’ve received your emails for at least at a couple years.
Thank you for the info on AI’s impact on food blogging. That is helpful to know and to pass on, and it is a simple thing to continue turning to a trusted blogger for recipes, to purchase a cookbook (doing so now), and support small businesses.
We made a major move a month ago and I am overwhelmed—weekly meal plan suggestions are saving me right now. Thank you for all you do!
Such a fun post. I love these. Very exciting on the celebrities. Elin is a very enthusiastic home cook so she will love your recipes. I loved Five Star Weekend! Need to rewatch it.
Big no to AI recipes! I trust Mel!
I say it all the time: Mel is THE best. You continue to bless our family’s life. My kid’s know if they want a recipe to look here first. Besides coming to the website and printing recipes, please let us know other ways to help. Summer is definitely a vibe, usually by now I am in fall prep/planning mode, but I am not there yet. I think ill just soak in the “chill” (in reality it is a million degrees) feeling of summer and wait until the season changes to switch modes. Wishing you all the best.
Mel, I resist AI in all its forms except maybe family history/name indexing. I have never commented on your blog (or really any other blog for that matter), but if commenting potentially helps you compete against “the machine,” I’ll comment! 🥰
I would be VERY interested in the pdf for college students/new cooks! Great idea! All the best!
Love this, as I do all of your posts. And when I search, I google for “Mel” recipe. One question – do you have a recommendation for vanilla protein powder? Thank you!
Hey Mel- love this post! My kids start on Monday! So crazy. Thanks for the update on AI and the impact. My question for you is what is most beneficial? Do you need us to keep “searching” your recipes and go to the link that way? Can we go straight to your website? I already subscribe to your email list. But I’m happy to keep helping in other ways too! Love you and all that you do!
Whenever I serve something new to my visiting family members, without exception they ask if this is from “Mel.” It always is. Plus, one of my adult granddaughters told me never, ever to trust AI.
There are not many things better than welcoming home a son after two years. I got teary just reading about it.
I always look here for anything I want to make before checking elsewhere because I know you’ve got the best! I’m glad celebrities recognize that as well (so surreal, I’m sure!). I usually come to your site and search for a recipe, but is it better to click your site from a Google search?
Mel, I love your Friday thoughts posts! Though you don’t know me, so often I feel like there is someone in the world who understands me! 🙂
I am a puzzle lover, and my MIL recently got us the All4Jig puzzle board. I love it!! If you don’t have something similar, I think you’d love it!
Thank you as always Mel. I want to say how much your blog and recipes have impacted my life. When I started having kids I had no idea how to cook or bake. Now with 6 kids under 9 it is my full time job haha. I am on your website Every. Single. Day. Their most requested meals are pizza rolls, Korean beef bowls, taco soup, and your teriyaki grilled chicken with coconut rice. My family loves your recipes and I hope you can keep posting and creating.
Just got my son home from his mission to Brazil this month too. And I’m with you on the surreal feeling in the airport of him really being there! So fun.
Thank you for blogging. I’m annoyed at many aspects of AI too but I love your recipes so much whenever I need anything I always enter Mel’s kitchen cafe and then my food search and it keeps taking me to your site.
I also have been printing your cooking guide and giving it out for graduation gifts. Such a great blessing!
I do that too. You can also tell Google if you use that to make Mel your preferred site and it’ll show her results first.
After a long, though not a bad, week reading this post gave me the energy to tackle this friday!
So fun to have your son home and he’s so lucky that your super power is feeding people! I’m still working on that one!
I’ll take Mel over AI any day!!
But Mel, you ARE the best food blogger!! Seriously, what an awesome shoutout. Congrats!!!!
I love reading your blog and your recipes! Please keep it going with the Friday Thoughts. It’s like catching up with an old friend and you hit every topic under the sun until the next time you speak!
Love your Friday posts and appreciate all the great recipes and game recommendations you’ve shared over the years! I can’t tell you how many we have bought over the years and how much fun we’ve had with family far and wide! This week I am especially appreciating your PDF for new cooks. Our youngest heads back to college and to an apartment, so I printed this for him today. THANK YOU! 🙂 And AI–ugh. So interesting and helpful, but so impactful in ways that are not so positive–appreciate the insights from your industry/POV. It is affecting all our work lives in such strange new ways.
