Friday Thoughts: Midsummer Survival
Welcome to the middle of summer! HOW ARE WE DOING?
I feel like one either approaches summer like “fave season! no schedule! bring it on!” or “send prayers! still have to work! need structure!” Ok, perhaps I’m over simplifying it…but I would love to know where you fit on that spectrum.
I was debating whether or not to even do a Friday Thoughts post, but I recently ran into a few people I didn’t know (at a wedding!) who read my blog, and they both mentioned how much they enjoy reading these posts. Since I also like getting a real-life glimpse into other people’s lives, I decided to throw one together.
In this post, I’m pretty much just chatting about all.the.things and wishing, as always, we had a way to smoosh this corner of the internet into my kitchen so we could all be communing around my counter, eating cookies and solving all of life’s questions.
If you’re here just for the recipes, no worries! Monday I have a fabulous new light and delicious dinner recipe coming that I’ve been eating on repeat.
Homecoming + Cold Plunge
We welcomed my son, Walker, home from his 2-year church mission to the Philippines. I couldn’t stop exclaiming over him at the airport. I just couldn’t believe that after two years, he was right there! It was kind of surreal, and so, so fun. It was just our little family at the airport (totally his non-attention, lowkey style), but we did get to video in his older brother in Utah and his younger brother in New Zealand while waiting for his luggage.
We escaped for a few days up to the mountains right after he got home. Literally did nothing other than hang out, listen to my boys play lots of guitar around the fire, surf behind the boat (not me 😜), fish (again, not me), eat lots of good food, and paddleboard around the lake.
The airbnb we stayed at had a sauna, so I had this brilliant idea to do a sauna/cold plunge challenge one morning. My mom was there and caught it all on video (my 72-year old dad did it with me). I was so excited to watch the video because I couldn’t wait to see myself looking like an absolute formidable athlete running down the hill post-sauna to the freezing lake to dive in. Um, yeah, not so much. Instead I looked like a lumbering polar bear screeching it’s guts out and pinching it’s nose to ungracefully belly flop in the water. Ah, middle age humility. It’s my constant companion these days.
While my son loved the food in the Philippines, he can’t get enough of his favorite foods here since he’s been home. I’ve been eagerly asking him what he wants me to make, because a) food is my love language and b) he has announced he wants to bulk up. I have never taken a responsibility so seriously; I was born for this. 😜💪🏼
Here are a few of his favorite recipes I’ve made him so far:
- Cinnamon rolls
- Homemade pizza rolls
- Rollup pancakes
- Crispy baked shrimp tacos
- Bagel bread (this was top of his list!)
- Egg roll skillet meal
- Our go-to freezer bean burritos
- Breadsticks
- Homemade pizza
- Hawaiian haystacks
Games + Puzzles We Are Loving
We keep several games out at our kitchen table all summer long. They aren’t always the same – we rotate through them. But keeping them downstairs means we play them a lot more than if someone has to trek *all the way up* to the game closet.
- Brian and my daughter have been playing this one nonstop. She bought it for Brian for Father’s Day, and it has been a clever, fun 2-person game. They also love playing old school Mastermind together.
- This is another great 2-person (or more!) game that is out right now. We play it a lot because it is quick, easy-to-learn, and fun (also: frustrating!!).
- My parents have had one of these games sitting on their coffee table for decades. Someone is always tinkering with it when we’re sitting around chatting in their living room. I finally got our family one to keep around!
- I’ve bought this active game for two nephews’ birthdays the last month or so, and it has been an instant hit. My sister texted me the evening of my nephew’s birthday saying he had been outside playing with it for hours.
- I keep a puzzle up pretty much all summer. We’ve done several Spaghetti Tree puzzles and love them! This USA one was especially fun.
Any games you are loving to recommend? Comment below and let me know! I love getting new game recommendations.
AI and Blogging
Hmmm, this might be a longer discussion for a different time and audience (😅), but it’s worth bringing up simply because it effects my daily life as a food blogger…and will definitely impact for how long (and whether or not) I have a food blog in the future.
Basically, as we know, AI is everywhere. And it definitely isn’t all bad (I use it frequently in my own life!). But when it comes to a food blog, like mine, the impact has been profound.
Over the years, I have greatly benefitted from search traffic. My blog and recipes have ranked really well in Google and other search engines, which has been awesome and so beneficial to me and my business!
However, AI search mode/results, along with ChatGPT (and other chatbots), have had a significant and serious impact on search traffic for websites like mine, because they give answers and recipes (untested recipes, usually) in nanoseconds to people without sending them to actual websites.
When search traffic and clicks go down, so does revenue. And while I certainly don’t blog just for the money, this is a full-time business, and I have a lot of operating costs to maintain (as well as the fact that my business financially supports my family while my husband is growing his own business).

I’ve had endless discussions with fellow food blogging friends and my husband about what the future holds. The truth is: none of us really know.
While the pendulum feels like it is swinging far, far over the side of relying on AI completely, my hopes is that with time, people will come to realize they actually do value a real human voice and trusted, tested recipes and the pendulum will swing back toward the center a little bit.
But it may not. And if it takes too long, I sometimes wonder if I’ll have “aged out” of blogging completely?
Anyway, you don’t need a sob story (despite the fact that thinking of NOT connecting with you in this space actually does make me want to cry), but the impact of AI on food bloggers is real and very uncertain. If you’ve been on Pinterest lately and seen the AI slop that has taken over that platform, that will give you an indication of what AI is doing to the industry as a whole. It kind of makes me sick (especially when I realize people aren’t able to discern what is AI and what is real).
On the positive side, I am so appreciative of all of you who comment here. Who click on actual links and rely on the trusted recipes that I test over and over. Who take the time to leave reviews on recipes (doing so gives a decidedly *human* aspect to my website!). Who subscribe to my email list. And who reach out to let me know that you appreciate the recipes and content. I know life is busy, so thank you.
I’ve been food blogging for nearly 20 years. A lot has changed. And while I certainly haven’t seen anything quite like what AI is doing to the internet right now, I have weathered other internet/technical storms in the past as things have evolved and changed. Hopefully there is a way forward so I can continue to share my favorite recipes with all of you.
It means so, so much to me that you are here. I can’t say that enough. 💗
A Few Extra Things
And now, let’s end things on a better, more lighthearted note!
- I mentioned this on Instagram, but recently Jennifer Garner was on a podcast and when asked who her favorite food blogger is, she mentioned my name. Yes, I about fell over. Yes, I was super flattered. Yes, I thought she must surely be talking about another “Mel’s Kitchen Cafe.” And then Elin Hilderbrand (author and host of the podcast) sent me a DM saying she started following my blog. Of course, I used both as a flex to my family that night at dinner…except it turns out that none of them were really all that impressed (made clear when they asked, “who are those people?”) 😜 #keepingmehumble
- On a completely unrelated note, I used these best-ever ice cream scoops to help scoop hundreds of ice cream sundaes for a wedding reception this weekend. They’re inexpensive and really great (plus, hello, so many cute colors).
- This is the cutest shirt. I sized up because the underarm area is a little snug, but it’s super lightweight and adorable.
- I’m all about homemade granola when it works out, but this dark chocolate coconut LoveCrunch granola might need to be a forever-staple in my pantry (also loving their Dubai-flavored granola that I found at Ross of all places!).
- I’m slowly gathering items to send with my son when he heads off to college (for the first time) this fall. I’ll try to keep track of a list of what we get him and what ends up working well (and what doesn’t!). I’m printing off this packet to send with him (and hoping he’ll want to do a little cooking before he goes since he wasn’t super interested when he was in high school, but if you’ve parented young adult kids, you understand how well some of those suggestions go over 👀).
- I am still eating these overnight oats on repeat. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve had them every morning without fail for over four months. I’ve started making them in individual-size containers for days when I’ll be out and about and also because a few in my family have started eating them, too, and it makes it easier for them to grab in the early morning before work. I use these containers which are perfect for the oats + toppings. Here are the measurements I use for each individual portion: 45 grams rolled oats, 22 grams chia seeds/basil seeds/or a combo, one scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder, pinch of salt, a scant 1 cup almond milk.
I’ve been cooking and recipe testing up a storm on some free days this summer, and I am so very excited about the recipes that will be hitting the blog over the next few months!
Well, that’s a wrap! The rest of our summer is pretty laid back. We’re home for the most part other than a quick trip to Utah for a niece’s wedding. School starts in less than four weeks!
I hope you are having a great summer! I’d love to hear any and everything you want to share below. Thank you so much for being here!
I love this picture above ⬆️ My oldest son with his two grandmothers. I’m blessed to have those three in my life!
You’re the cutest, Mel. I love how wholesome your blog is. I don’t follow anyone or read blogs or social media posts- but I do read your stuff! I love seeing your posts on family, faith and personal issues!! Helps us 40 something moms not feel so alone. I’ve been religiously going to your blog since my (just started senior year 😢) was a baby! You helped me learn how to cook!!
I feel like we are friends? Should we be friends!?
Well deserved recognition from Thee Jennifer Gardner!! 😊
Summer (school-wise, not heat wise) is over here for us in AZ! School has started. 🥵
Summer is the BEST! In my little corner of Western Washington the summer season is so short, but so incredible…so we truly soak up every moment. As a Mom, I’ve always loved the different pace that summer offers with kids, even now that they are mostly grown. For the two still at home it means summer jobs, camps, and buddies hanging together (often at our house eating Mel’s amazing cookies becasue I love being the Mom feeding them!) And for the one not living at home anymore, it means we get to see him more often because we either make the trip to Spokane to hang with him or he gets home more often becasue summer is a good time to take that hard earned PTO.
Mel, your blog is amazing. Your recipes are top notch and tried and true for families. Your meal planning tips are priceless becasue they come from a mom who gets it. Your weekly menu plans are inspirational for when the weekly grind of meal planning hits the doldrums. Your gift guides, Friday Thoughts and all the added side comments (tips, links, additions, pictures and notes) for every single recipe are SO real life and create such a sense of community for clearly, so many. Be encouaged! AI can not replace real life, real community, real food, and real blessings!
Keep on doing!!! And that LED throwing game is in my cart.
You should try the Purely Elizabeth Chocolate Chip Cookie granola. So good! And dangerous 🙂
Mel, I absolutely love your recipes and your blog. My only regret is that I wish I lived closer to you because I am sure we would be great friends. However, you are the same age as my kids but I think we could make it work. I use your recipes nearly every day and people are always asking me for the recipe when we have them over. My answer is always “of course…It’s Mel’s” Don’t ever stop! My life would not be the same. 🙂
Just wanted to let you know, when I’m looking for a new recipe, it’s your website or OBB! Love you both and know that any recipe either of you posts, it’s going to be a winner. So thank you for that! (I also use both of your cookbooks.) I’d much rather get a trusted recipe from you than a made up one from AI. I always tell people where my recipes come from, so hopefully that does a little part in new people finding you!
Your recipes have been such a blessing to me – I’ve totally grown up as a mom with you. My oldest just went off to college and so many of our favorite recipes are yours! Tried and true!
I never comment, so felt I should. We use at least one of your recipes daily!!! At dinner my kids will always ask, this must be Mel’s💜 You are just part of our family 🥰 We hope you keep sharing!!!!!
Elise, I feel the same. My maiden name is Pendleton. Who are your parents? maybe we’re related.
I hope your blog NEVER goes away, I would be lost without it. I don’t even consider buying bread, flat bread, buns or cookies. I read labels and even thought store bought products are convenient, nothing can replace home baked products, especially if you care about your health. However, before I found your blog I was pretty much a failure in the kitchen. You’ve taught me just about everything I needed to know. So thank you for always testing and re-testing, your recipes not only never fail, but people actually think I know how to cook and are really surprised considering my many past failure. (LOL anytime I was invited over, everyone used to always tell me to “just stop at the store and pick up some rolls”). So THANK YOU!
I cook from your website/blog daily and it is pretty much the only one I trust for reliably great recipes and an environment that doesn’t feel like it is only about getting clicks and attention (even if that is also a motivating factor). Thank you for being more real, genuine and down to earth in a world that grows increasingly fake, attention-seeking and devoid of humanity by the day, due in part to AI. I would join a subscription app made by you without a moment of hesitation. Wishing you a way forward and continued success!
Hi Mel
First off THANK YOU for being a real live person that is trustworthy and an amazing cook/baker. So many delicious recipes you have shared with my family❤️.
I follow only a couple food bloggers that I know have the most delicious recipes and go direct to their site when I’m looking for something. No AI for me except to rearrange my furniture.
So happy your family could all be together. Our family is near and far and those times when we are together (even part of us) my heart is so full of joy. Family is the greatest treasure on earth
I hope humans win over AI.
For the record, I’ll continue to cook from your blog, we love so many of your recipes an and appreciate all your effort ❤️ is also really enjoy your Friday thoughts!
Mel, I just wanted you to know that I am still making recipes of yours that I have made since I first found your blog about 15 or so years ago (gosh I am old!) and making all the new-to-me ones too (beef and broccoli ramen last night was SO GOOD). You have always been and will always be my favorite blogger and I always search your blog first when I am looking for a recipe. I am so sad about the rise of AI for many reasons, and even though it can be helpful in some ways, I am worried for our future! Now I really sound old, lol! But if I am searching something on Pinterest (only when I can’t find it on your blog, lol!), if it’s that shiny, glossy, overly-perfect-looking AI slop, I immediately move on!
As far as summer goes, this part-time teacher can’t get enough of the late nights, sleeping-in and slow mornings and no routine! I need more time!!! Ha!
Oh and also, I kind of sort of think of you as a real-life friend….as in ‘oh I need to see if Mel has a recipe for….’ or when I tell my hubby ‘I got this from Mel’……AI could never replace that!!! xoxo
You are irreplaceable!
It’s weird to think about your blog not existing even though all of us have to retire at some point! I’ve emailed you a couple times asking about an app based subscription to your website/content. You have so many loyal followers like me that it seems like this is one way you can combat AI, at least a little bit. I hope you can do this and I’d be honored to be your first subscriber! 😉
I would subscribe also!!
No doubt someone famous reads your blog, it is the best blog out there! I love your recipes, the way things are presented, you are always my go to for great recipes! Thanks for all the work you do. Also ,I made your spaghetti zucchini casserole this week for dinner , it was divine!
Jennifer Garner!?! That is SO amazing and as a fellow blogger, I get how good it feels to have this kind of mention. Go you!
Also, I unforuntately empathize with you over the way that AI has so negatively impacted the blogging world. I’ve been blogging for 17 years and have the same thoughts and feelings that you expressed. So far I’ve been able to stay afloat but I know others who are feeling like they need to shut down their sites because they can’t cover their costs anymore. Thanks for helping to raise awareness!
I’ve followed you for years! And thanks to your food blog I have climbed from being known as the worst cook in the family (only producing meals that were so inedible that the families trust pig was the only one that could enjoy it….true story🤦♀️) to actually a decent cook! And good enough that they asked me to head up the food for our family reunion as well as our ward’s girls camp😅 and so of coarse I’ve scoured your blog for all the tips and resources which have helped me immensely!
Appreciate you and your fantastic recipes! Prayers that you weather this AI storm.
I love your recipes! I’m sad that AI has affected you so much. But I appreciate your tried, true, and delicious recipes. And I appreciate that we’re in the same stage of life. Our kids are relatively the same age, so I feel like I can relate to you and everything you experience I am experiencing alongside you! Your websites is always my go to. Thank you!
Love your blog and recipes – AI will never be as cool as you, Mel! I’ve been trying to send people your way recently, as they eat something of yours that I’ve made and love it. And I think it is totally awesome that Jen Garner mentioned that she loves your blog and recipes – maybe she’ll invite you on her Pretend Cooking Show!
Elimino and Flip 7 are two games I’ve recently encountered- and have since bought more to give as gifts.
Welcome home to your son!! ❤️
The only time I ask the Internet for a recipe is only after I have looked at your site and not found it. Which is very rare. I go to your site for all my recipes!
Mel, I never comment, but I’m a faithful lurking follower since almost the beginning! 😂 I’m sick right now, therefore I have a moment to comment. I’ve made and loved your recipes for so long. I also love what you do to make such a great food community. And I wish you were my neighbor, just like so many others. We just moved to Utah, so now I’m a little closer. Ha! I’m just sending out my 4th missionary and I understand your feelings- it’s wonderful and hard. Thanks for putting in so much work to make a wonderful resource for all of us.
Never go away because, honestly, I couldn’t live without you and your blog 😬😄
Congrats on your son coming home!
I’m usually a purposefully slow adopter of technology, including with AI. Especially with recipes I don’t want to waste my time and money making a recipe that hasn’t been created and well-tested by a human. So I will continue to source most of my recipes from your website and cookbook. I hope you’ll be able to continue this work for as long as you want to do it.
Whatever you decide to do in this everchanging technological landscape, I do want you to know that I fully credit your blog for my ability to cook anything that actually tastes good. I can count on your recipes to turn out well every single time, and I refer back to them frequently. I started following along 15 years ago and am so glad I did! So just know that your human touch matters!
Thank you! I always just come straight to your blog when looking for a recipe so I really hope AI doesn’t affect it. This week, we tried the chicken avocado salad and every member of my family was apprehensive and then loved it. I was looking for something light, cool and easy to make for a summer dinner. We ate it with toasted sourdough and berries. Summer is my favorite season!
I love your blog. And also don’t trust AI too much. I love summer, and it feels like I should be on vacation every day, so I cold plunge and lay out by my in ground hot tub most days. I live in Vegas, it is so hot, so the cold plunge saves my middle aged body.
We are picking up my missionary in 12 days. I am anticipating the foods he will want to eat when he gets home. We are also collecting for college. 2 boys, 18 year old that just graduated and my missionary. Both starting freshman year at 2 different schools.
I love your site, Mel! I literally have it saved to my favorites on my iPhone browser and is hands down my most used cookbook! I read every email you send and I will forever be a supporter! I am anti-AI over here as a proposed data center is threatening my city in central WI. I will do what I can to support my favorite food bloggers!
I love your blog! This is seriously the first place I check for recipes. I know whatever it is will be sooo good coming from you!! Thank you!
I simply love your content, whether it’s your random thoughts on a Friday or one of your amazing recipes. My 15 yr old daughter recently told me that when she moves out someday, all she wants is her own copy of your cookbook, because you are the GOAT!
You are my favourite food blogger. AI will not replace you for me. I love knowing I can trust your recipes. Thanks for your example and influence in the blogging world. Thank you for helping me become a more confident and better baker.
I absolutely love you, your site and your recipes!
I feel so sad for all the food bloggers who are affected by Ai.
Tip:
Did you know that after you type in your google search word(s), that if you type in:
-ai (as in minus ai), it won’t show you the ai summary and will list the recipes, website and blogs that we used to see?!
I’ve tried it with numerous searches and it works – – try it!
I never knew that! I’m going to use this
I powered through that podcast at double speed just to hear Jennifer Garner say she loves your cooking blog the best. I agree with her wholeheartedly! I will never rely on AI for a recipe.. I learned many years ago that not all recipes can be trusted when I made a spaghetti sauce recipe from allrecipes that was so gross. I hope you can weather this storm and that internet traffic picks up for you!
Also, I am so ready for this hot summer to be over. I’ve tried not to use my oven because it really heats up the house, but it’s hard because I love baking and enchiladas and all the delicious things.
I love these posts! As a teacher navigating AI has put a twist on long held practices too! Best of luck to all of us! I come here between 10-15 times a week minimum looking for recommendations! The only time I use AI for food is when you don’t have a recipe or I’m being lazy on my math to adjust to feeding a crowd- but I always use your recipe as the base.
Thanks for being my family’s favorite recipe source. We’ve loved everything we have tried on your website/cookbook.
My summer was supposed to be filled with daily closet and cabinet cleaning but has been spent going to visit my son in the hospital and the closets will wait.
I have many of the nurses your blog for recipes and I hope you continue to get traffic after being mentioned by Jennifer Garner!!
Your site is my favorite. It makes me laugh and occasionally cry, but mostly, just fills our bodies with good food.
Mel, thank you for being so real and relatable to us all. Your food blog, cookbooks and Friday Thoughts are so incredibly delicious, useful and insightful.
No AI can replace that ever! Enjoy your summer, your son back home and expressing your “love language” of food to those you mean so much to you and appreciate all you do.
Thank you for what you do here! I have loved your recipes for many years and love these Friday thoughts posts. We have been playing “That’s Not a Hat” card game this summer and enjoying it. I love your game recommendations! Thanks for all you share and recommendation!
Ok, friends, just sitting down to read through comments, and now I have tears in my eyes…your kindness is so, so appreciated. You have no idea. Thank you for continuing to be here and deliberately searching out recipes…and just for feeling like dear friends. I hope you know how much I really mean that. This is such a special little corner of the internet. I’m going to go through comments and answer specific questions…but just know I am grateful for every single one of you that have taken the time to show up in the comment thread today sharing whatever is on your heart and mind.
Oh Mel! My 15 year old is a fabulous baker. We are a GF house and adapt your recipes all the time. The other day she asked if she could make a cake she asked for a recipe for on ChatGPT. Spoiler alert..it was terrible. She said “mom, ya know Mel (like you’re one of the family) has never done us wrong. Why did I think a robot would do better?!?” She trashed the cake and made your chocolate sheet cake instead (delicious).
Last week I did band camp for 100 kids (2 meals a day). I used so much from your girls camp post! My 15 year old also did your white sheet cake with berries for one of the meals. We love your human self. Please don’t leave us. You’re a fixture in our lives!!! I promise I will comment more! 😘😘
AI recipes would have us spending a lot of time meal planning, shoppiny, cooking and throwing it all in the garbage as my family would reject it. We have cooked exclusively from you for 20 years and it makes me shudder to have to think of relying on my mountain of Mel’s printouts for the next 20. Please don’t leave us and bring on the second edition of the cookbook! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I’ve felt a lot of the AI gloom lately too, but it is true that most of what google AI spits out at me is garbage. FWIW I don’t look at the printed recipes I’ve gotten from you and make all the time. I always look them up on my phone or family computer so that I can give you more internet traffic 🙂 Your food blog is much appreciated by our household.
Thanks for all you do! I’ll always go to your website, you’re definitely in my normal rotation of recipes in my house! Pinterest these days is sad.
I honestly think people will get tired of “AI Voice” whether in written or audio form. I am already tired of it. This exhaustion will lead them back to actual, real people writing and speaking. And I think it will happen sooner rather than later. Time will tell if this is just a pipe dream or reality but, either way, God is still bigger 🙂
I always love these posts. That is such a bummer how AI is impacting your business. I sure hope you get to stick around food blogging forever! Or as long as you want! I was cackling at your description of running into the lake 😂.
I love these posts!!! Thanks for sharing your great recipes and random thoughts with us.
You should have just let me 3D print you a Shut the Box game! Also, remember when you looked super athletic and lithe on your cold plunge run to the beach 😂.
You’re a fan favorite in my Southern Utah Desert community. We all reference you lovingly like you’re the “ good old faithful” of all of our recipes. My favorites are your egg roll skillet, ziti pasta, and the black bean and sweet potato hash that goes into your burritos (that I secretly eat with eggs for breakfast😋). Thanks for the family friendly meals, real life living, and willingness to be honest/messy/adorable at the same time. I wish we could share cups of sugar and eggs over the fence! ♥️ Long Live Mel. 😘
When I am looking for a recipe, yours is the first website I go to to search! While I use AI every day in my job, I am sorry for the impact. It is having on so many.
