Friday Thoughts: Midsummer Survival
Welcome to the middle of summer! HOW ARE WE DOING?
I feel like one either approaches summer like “fave season! no schedule! bring it on!” or “send prayers! still have to work! need structure!” Ok, perhaps I’m over simplifying it…but I would love to know where you fit on that spectrum.
I was debating whether or not to even do a Friday Thoughts post, but I recently ran into a few people I didn’t know (at a wedding!) who read my blog, and they both mentioned how much they enjoy reading these posts. Since I also like getting a real-life glimpse into other people’s lives, I decided to throw one together.
In this post, I’m pretty much just chatting about all.the.things and wishing, as always, we had a way to smoosh this corner of the internet into my kitchen so we could all be communing around my counter, eating cookies and solving all of life’s questions.
If you’re here just for the recipes, no worries! Monday I have a fabulous new light and delicious dinner recipe coming that I’ve been eating on repeat.
Homecoming + Cold Plunge
We welcomed my son, Walker, home from his 2-year church mission to the Philippines. I couldn’t stop exclaiming over him at the airport. I just couldn’t believe that after two years, he was right there! It was kind of surreal, and so, so fun. It was just our little family at the airport (totally his non-attention, lowkey style), but we did get to video in his older brother in Utah and his younger brother in New Zealand while waiting for his luggage.
We escaped for a few days up to the mountains right after he got home. Literally did nothing other than hang out, listen to my boys play lots of guitar around the fire, surf behind the boat (not me 😜), fish (again, not me), eat lots of good food, and paddleboard around the lake.
The airbnb we stayed at had a sauna, so I had this brilliant idea to do a sauna/cold plunge challenge one morning. My mom was there and caught it all on video (my 72-year old dad did it with me). I was so excited to watch the video because I couldn’t wait to see myself looking like an absolute formidable athlete running down the hill post-sauna to the freezing lake to dive in. Um, yeah, not so much. Instead I looked like a lumbering polar bear screeching it’s guts out and pinching it’s nose to ungracefully belly flop in the water. Ah, middle age humility. It’s my constant companion these days.
While my son loved the food in the Philippines, he can’t get enough of his favorite foods here since he’s been home. I’ve been eagerly asking him what he wants me to make, because a) food is my love language and b) he has announced he wants to bulk up. I have never taken a responsibility so seriously; I was born for this. 😜💪🏼
Here are a few of his favorite recipes I’ve made him so far:
- Cinnamon rolls
- Homemade pizza rolls
- Rollup pancakes
- Crispy baked shrimp tacos
- Bagel bread (this was top of his list!)
- Egg roll skillet meal
- Our go-to freezer bean burritos
- Breadsticks
- Homemade pizza
- Hawaiian haystacks
Games + Puzzles We Are Loving
We keep several games out at our kitchen table all summer long. They aren’t always the same – we rotate through them. But keeping them downstairs means we play them a lot more than if someone has to trek *all the way up* to the game closet.
- Brian and my daughter have been playing this one nonstop. She bought it for Brian for Father’s Day, and it has been a clever, fun 2-person game. They also love playing old school Mastermind together.
- This is another great 2-person (or more!) game that is out right now. We play it a lot because it is quick, easy-to-learn, and fun (also: frustrating!!).
- My parents have had one of these games sitting on their coffee table for decades. Someone is always tinkering with it when we’re sitting around chatting in their living room. I finally got our family one to keep around!
- I’ve bought this active game for two nephews’ birthdays the last month or so, and it has been an instant hit. My sister texted me the evening of my nephew’s birthday saying he had been outside playing with it for hours.
- I keep a puzzle up pretty much all summer. We’ve done several Spaghetti Tree puzzles and love them! This USA one was especially fun.
Any games you are loving to recommend? Comment below and let me know! I love getting new game recommendations.
AI and Blogging
Hmmm, this might be a longer discussion for a different time and audience (😅), but it’s worth bringing up simply because it effects my daily life as a food blogger…and will definitely impact for how long (and whether or not) I have a food blog in the future.
Basically, as we know, AI is everywhere. And it definitely isn’t all bad (I use it frequently in my own life!). But when it comes to a food blog, like mine, the impact has been profound.
Over the years, I have greatly benefitted from search traffic. My blog and recipes have ranked really well in Google and other search engines, which has been awesome and so beneficial to me and my business!
However, AI search mode/results, along with ChatGPT (and other chatbots), have had a significant and serious impact on search traffic for websites like mine, because they give answers and recipes (untested recipes, usually) in nanoseconds to people without sending them to actual websites.
When search traffic and clicks go down, so does revenue. And while I certainly don’t blog just for the money, this is a full-time business, and I have a lot of operating costs to maintain (as well as the fact that my business financially supports my family while my husband is growing his own business).

I’ve had endless discussions with fellow food blogging friends and my husband about what the future holds. The truth is: none of us really know.
While the pendulum feels like it is swinging far, far over the side of relying on AI completely, my hopes is that with time, people will come to realize they actually do value a real human voice and trusted, tested recipes and the pendulum will swing back toward the center a little bit.
But it may not. And if it takes too long, I sometimes wonder if I’ll have “aged out” of blogging completely?
Anyway, you don’t need a sob story (despite the fact that thinking of NOT connecting with you in this space actually does make me want to cry), but the impact of AI on food bloggers is real and very uncertain. If you’ve been on Pinterest lately and seen the AI slop that has taken over that platform, that will give you an indication of what AI is doing to the industry as a whole. It kind of makes me sick (especially when I realize people aren’t able to discern what is AI and what is real).
On the positive side, I am so appreciative of all of you who comment here. Who click on actual links and rely on the trusted recipes that I test over and over. Who take the time to leave reviews on recipes (doing so gives a decidedly *human* aspect to my website!). Who subscribe to my email list. And who reach out to let me know that you appreciate the recipes and content. I know life is busy, so thank you.
I’ve been food blogging for nearly 20 years. A lot has changed. And while I certainly haven’t seen anything quite like what AI is doing to the internet right now, I have weathered other internet/technical storms in the past as things have evolved and changed. Hopefully there is a way forward so I can continue to share my favorite recipes with all of you.
It means so, so much to me that you are here. I can’t say that enough. 💗
A Few Extra Things
And now, let’s end things on a better, more lighthearted note!
- I mentioned this on Instagram, but recently Jennifer Garner was on a podcast and when asked who her favorite food blogger is, she mentioned my name. Yes, I about fell over. Yes, I was super flattered. Yes, I thought she must surely be talking about another “Mel’s Kitchen Cafe.” And then Elin Hilderbrand (author and host of the podcast) sent me a DM saying she started following my blog. Of course, I used both as a flex to my family that night at dinner…except it turns out that none of them were really all that impressed (made clear when they asked, “who are those people?”) 😜 #keepingmehumble
- On a completely unrelated note, I used these best-ever ice cream scoops to help scoop hundreds of ice cream sundaes for a wedding reception this weekend. They’re inexpensive and really great (plus, hello, so many cute colors).
- This is the cutest shirt. I sized up because the underarm area is a little snug, but it’s super lightweight and adorable.
- I’m all about homemade granola when it works out, but this dark chocolate coconut LoveCrunch granola might need to be a forever-staple in my pantry (also loving their Dubai-flavored granola that I found at Ross of all places!).
- I’m slowly gathering items to send with my son when he heads off to college (for the first time) this fall. I’ll try to keep track of a list of what we get him and what ends up working well (and what doesn’t!). I’m printing off this packet to send with him (and hoping he’ll want to do a little cooking before he goes since he wasn’t super interested when he was in high school, but if you’ve parented young adult kids, you understand how well some of those suggestions go over 👀).
- I am still eating these overnight oats on repeat. I’m not exaggerating when I say that I’ve had them every morning without fail for over four months. I’ve started making them in individual-size containers for days when I’ll be out and about and also because a few in my family have started eating them, too, and it makes it easier for them to grab in the early morning before work. I use these containers which are perfect for the oats + toppings. Here are the measurements I use for each individual portion: 45 grams rolled oats, 22 grams chia seeds/basil seeds/or a combo, one scoop vanilla or chocolate protein powder, pinch of salt, a scant 1 cup almond milk.
I’ve been cooking and recipe testing up a storm on some free days this summer, and I am so very excited about the recipes that will be hitting the blog over the next few months!
Well, that’s a wrap! The rest of our summer is pretty laid back. We’re home for the most part other than a quick trip to Utah for a niece’s wedding. School starts in less than four weeks!
I hope you are having a great summer! I’d love to hear any and everything you want to share below. Thank you so much for being here!
I love this picture above ⬆️ My oldest son with his two grandmothers. I’m blessed to have those three in my life!
I can tell it feels so good to have your son home! Any time my adult kids come home for even a few days it’s always so good. When my son came home he also requested cinnamon rolls. Good choice! We’ve been doing a lot of puzzles and a couple of Lego sets that have been birthday presents. So fun!
I can’t remember if you have ever posted about the game “Piles”. That has been our game played on repeat all summer long! Even my kids that don’t love games love it! Can’t recommend it enough! Thanks for the Friday thoughts. I always read and look forward to them! Trying your coconut lime swig cookies this weekend! ❤️
I will be here forever, Mel. Your recipes and personality will always be what I choose over AI! I hope enough people feel the same to keep this corner of the internet up and running for a looong time! 🤞
I love your recipes. Please stay, please keep doing what you are doing. Currently we are making your cinnamon burst bread on repeat – ALOT!!! So yummy. All your food is so good. Thank you.
We love the game Splendor right now. Our young adult kids love to play it with us!
Thanks for still being here, Mel! I’ve been making your recipes ever since my husband and I first got married (14 years ago!). I’d say at least 75% of the recipes I make on repeat are yours, and I’m so grateful to you! Please don’t stop blogging.
That said, I recently have had to pivot myself because my job as a freelance copywriter no longer exists in this new world of zero-click traffic. So I understand more than most how scary and destabilizing it is! I decided to make lemons into lemonade and take this opportunity to get my master’s in clinical mental health counseling, so with any luck, it will all end up good in the end.
We love you! I will never stop reading and buying your cookbooks and, most importantly, making your recipes.
I’m sorry about the AI angst–I’m experiencing it in my own life too and have huge questions about its impact on my work. But I came to comment on those overnight oats! I eat them virtually every day–the only times I didn’t was the few times I forgot to make a new batch (oops) or when I decided to have leftover cake instead (sometimes you have to indulge!). I microwave them just enough to take the chill off–but not enough to make them hot, so they’re good in any season. I throw in frozen berries of some kind and I never get tired of it! Thank you for the quantities for individual servings. I usually double your recipe, so when I scoop the oats out in the morning I seem to take wildly varying amounts, often more than I need.
Piles is our current summer favorite game. That and anything from Grandpa Beck (cover your cookies is a fun one)! Mel is a household name here, even my 6 year old will regularly ask “is this Mel’s?” when I make something new (and the answer is nearly always yes). Even my 9yr old has recently jumped on the overnight oats bandwagon. And, I hate when AI gives recipe suggestions because exactly like you said, they’re not tested and I don’t have the confidence that it will taste good. Trust goes a long way with food (and so many other things)! Thank you for being a trusted friend to so many, Mel!
My family has also felt the effects of AI on our income and it has been quite a blow. I totally agree that the pendulum has swung so far in the opposite direction, and I’m crossing all my fingers and toes that it swings back and we can find some balance there.
I have used your recipes consistently for over 15 years and have never tried something me and my family didn’t love. I’m so glad Jen Garner called you out and hope for your ongoing success with your well crafted business built on wonderful food! Best wishes!
Yay for the return of your missionary! I personally don’t love AI recipes and always prefer someone I know is real and proven. I’m super grateful that food is your love language because so many of your wonderful recipes fill my home too.
I will never forgive AI if they make it impossible for you to keep going. I hope as you see how things develop you would consider if some sort of subscription would help make things work. Personally, I’ve gotten so much value from your website and would be happy to pay to help counter the effects of AI. I would see it back pay for the hundreds (thousands?) of times I’ve used your recipes for free!
We love games also! One we’ve been playing recently is Insider. One of my kids likes social deduction games which I usually actively dislike (Secret Hitler I’m looking at you.) I like Insider because the rounds are quick and there isn’t too much pressure. It is best with at least 5 players so that might not be a great one for your family right now. I’ll also always say yes to a round of Draftosaurus.
So excited for you that you have your son home ❤️. I’ve been following you pretty much since you started the blog, back when it was My Kitchen Café, and your recipes are a staple in our home. Not to mention we have so many of your games that you have suggested over the years 😊.
Those puzzles look amazing! And so glad you mentioned that Cooking 101 packet. I’ll be downloading for the college kid!
I appreciate the reminder about AI. I recently had been looking for a recipe and while I knew the website I googled and checked the Ai response. It was basically the same! And my thought was – well how do I know they did it right? What if they made changes? So I used the one on the website that I’ve always used. And now that I know how this affects you and others I will be sure to always do that!
Thanks for sharing all the fun links and thoughts. Always a joy to hear and I’ve found some awesome products over the years! Happy summer!
I’m going to click on as many links to your site as I can from now on because there’s no way I want your blog to go anywhere!
We’ve been loving your overnight oats recipe. We’ve been eating it twice a week for probably 3 months. We never get tired of it and it’s so easy.
There is no one like you. Thank you for helping so many families gather around food.
Amen!
Love your updates and insights and the list of what your son wanted to eat. We had kids visiting and got the family together after working a double shift at the temple. I decided to do a huge salad bar with all the toppings. Someone also suggested Hawaiian haystacks, so we did both. Love your sauce for the chicken without any canned soup. We filled the countertop island with so many options, including goldfish crackers, baby corn cobs, maraschino cherries, toasted almonds, plus every fruit and veggie of all colors. Several were interchangeable—others we sorted into groups, but it was fun. Your chocolate zucchini cake was the highlight once we could eat another bite. Thanks for making our meals so delicious!! Your tips and instructions are the best! AI will never give cooks of all levels (including celebrities) the confidence and creativity that you share.
Here through thick and thin!! Yay for Jennifer Garner!!
Mel your blog has brought my home so much deliciousness and joy. No wonder you have Jennifer Garner following you with Elin Hillenbrand. They know good when you taste it. I have test to make a recipe that is not delicious. Thank you for being real and so grounded. The world could always use a little more of that.
Thank you
I am so sorry for the AI issue! You’re the best “real” person food blogger out there. 🙂 So many of your recipes have become staples in our house. The freezer burritos are always there for my husband. The granola bites that my daughter honestly lived on when figuring out her food allergies (not exaggerating – pretty much all she could keep down for months). I never knew how good cinnamon rolls could be until I tried your recipe with cardamom. The white bread, the wheat bread – golden! Your lasagna soup which is my daughter’s favorite and what she is requesting to eat right before heading off to college. The divine breadsticks grace our table when eating spaghetti and no store-bought bread would ever be tolerated in its place. The Asiago pull-apart bread that has become my daughter’s best friend’s favorite request when she comes to visit. The list goes on… Please know that we know you are not replaceable and I hope you keep going. Good luck and thank you for being someone who has shaped our family table with her recipes!
My feelings about summer are constantly evolving– I used to LOVE LOVE LOVE it because my husband was a teacher so he was home with us all summer. Then he switched into admin and suddenly I was home with all these kids by myself and it seemed really hard. Then my kids got older and easier but I started working and it was kind of hard to figure it all out. And now I’m a seminary teacher and I’m back to loving summer because it’s MY time off!!! What a journey! 😂
I love these updates and have so much more to say but I’m going to keep it short in the comments. Glad you got your boy back!!!!
I’m constantly clicking on your blog– not feeding the AI beast on my end!
Hi. Please don’t go away. Whenever I need a recipe, I search your site first, before I search Google. But now I wonder, is it better to come to you directly? Or better to do a google search with “Mel’s Kitchen Cafe” in the search terms? Which is better for your revenue? I’m willing to be slightly inconvenienced if it means keeping your recipes going.
Simple game recommendations: SkyJo, Quixx, That’s Pretty Clever
I just want to add to the love and support. You’re the best. 🩷
Mel! You’re seriously the best! I’ve been following you since 2012 and almost all of my recipes are from you! My daughter and I are putting together a recipe binder before she heads off to college and they’re basically all your recipes! We came across another recipe source and she said to skip including it because it wasn’t yours (I completely agreed)! We’ll continue to visit your site for no-fail, delicious recipes! I also love your Friday posts, gift guides, recommended kitchen gadgets, etc! Thanks for all that you do and share!! 💕
I’ve also described the “AI everything” as a pendulum My career was in tech so I have firsthand experience about tech pendulums. I’m retired now and coach cross country and track at my local high school. AI is very helpful helping me refine many things about coaching. My recent college graduate, however, is experiencing the downside. So many companies appear to have hit the pause button on hirings. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said, “Things will get better when the pendulum swings back, be patient. Can I make you something to eat?” I will forever visit food blogs, mostly yours, because I like the tested and reliable recipes. Thanks for weathering the pendulum!
As have I, in marketing. Great take Eileen! I felt very lost for about two years, but we are starting to see where we fit in this new landscape. Hang in there!
MEL. The AI problem. I’m so sick of it. I’m one of those people who genuinely uses Pinterest for recipes and ideas and implements them in my life. I’m so tired of all the hoops I have to jump through now to simply figure out if it’s a real person making the recipe, or a robot. Unless it’s a food blog/site I’m really familiar with, I immediately jump to the “About Me” page before I look at a recipe, and see if it’s real or fake. You do it enough and you start to know the signs in pictures and writing.
Do you know what I miss? The horrible lighting food pictures from 15 years ago, because those were real. Real people, real food, real recipes. Let’s bring back terribly lit pictures!
Until the robots realize what we’re doing and start doing it too…. I want to cry.
Mel’s Kitchen Cafe has been my go to for years!! I have always loved knowing that you’re a nearby neighbor to my home in Twin Falls so I can identify with a lot of the regional stuff you post about. Your recipes are just do-able and use ingredients that are easy to find, if not already in my fridge and pantry regularly, and are thus good for last minute recipe lizzies like me!! My twenty-something son is living with me and my hubby these days and he is trying to pack on pounds for power-lifting, so bring on the yummy protein+ recipes!!! We appreciate you, Mel!!
Oh no!! The thought of no Mel’s kitchen cafe stresses me out! I look up recipes pretty much daily, if not several times a day. I so appreciate all your hard work and recipes! Thank you so much! I pray it all evens out and you can keep going🙏🙏
Hi Mel! Loved your post! I’m here to echo the others who dont know how they’d survive dinner each night without you. I have your cookbook and many other recipes printed and when I’m searching for a recipe on Google I also include your website name as others mentioned. I love this space, thank you for the personal touch and your many hours of working to provide delicious, fool-proof recipes!
Mel, Thank you for all you do for us folks trying to feed the people we love the most (even when we maybe don’t feel the love – looking at you, 15 year old girl, who turned up her nose at Mel’s Quick Garlic Peas!). And thank you for keeping it free for all of us running households on a budget!! AI….life is too short, ingredients too expensive, and my kids are too opinionated for me to trust my food prep to a machine. I always go straight to the blogger’s website. I read the comments or reviews posted by real people who fed real people. And if I don’t have time for all that, I start my search with “Mel’s Kitchen Cafe _____” with the blank being what I’m looking for (salmon, chicken, asparagus – whatever). If there is anything else we readers can do to help (ways to search, always leave a review, etc.) please let us know!!
I love your food blog and getting all the emails that I get from you. Your recipes have become a huge part of my cooking and baking these days. I would be devastated if you decided to stop blogging and doing your Facebook and Instagram posts/stories. AI has NOTHING on you and your tried and true recipes! In fact, I never use AI to cook or bake except to ask how to convert measurements from time to time. It blows my mind that so many people are using it now a days. Anyway, just know that I love your blog. My sister is the one who told me about your blog so I do think my whole family now follows you! You have a lot of support in Utah!! Sending you so much love! 💕
Please don’t ever stop sharing recipes!! We LOVE them!! 90% of what I make each week comes from you! Thank you for all you do to keep food fun & delicious!!
Another blogger I follow suggested that when we are looking up recipes on a search engine to put in their name first….like Mel’s kitchen cafe cinnamon rolls. That way the top link should be to the actual website. And also, be sure to click on the link instead of the AI box at the top where they might reprint the recipe.
Love when these Friday posts pop up. They are always filled with good stuff.
Good luck with the rest of your summer. My youngest of 4 kids just graduated from high school in Utah and is moving to BYU next month. I’ll be sending Cooking 101 with him. So thanks for that! Otherwise I’m having quite a restful summer.
Just a note to say I love Friday thoughts, still look up your recipes, and I started eating your overnight oats and love them (but I’m taking a break because I made your granola and have been doing yogurt parfaits for the last week). Thanks for all you do for all of us!
Hi Mel!
My summer “project” has been putting together a cookbook for my sister going to BYU in the fall- we have so many cookbooks so I decided to weed through all of our recipes and put all the ones we actually use into one binder for her. while I’m at it I’m making 2 more for myself and my other sister so we can have our family recipes in one place! It’s definitely a project! Although the fact that a lot of our favorites are yours make has made it easier! I’ve printed out lots of yours and I’m typing up the rest of our family favorites. I’m through the desserts (the longest section haha), sides, salads, and bread and only have the main dishes to go 💪. Next will be to figure out how to make a binder look cute and not cheap. Hahah. Thanks for being a staple in our family cookbook!
I’ve been using your recipes for a long time but never commented on your blog – BUT, since I’m eating your overnight oats RIGHT NOW, I think it is time I thank you for them! I make 6 servings at a time and eat them throughout the week. And I’m sending off my 4th and final missionary (farewell is in 2 days!) so I feel like you are a kindred spirit. Thanks again!
Hello Mel!
I am so happy you are here!! My daughter does cook with AI, so I understand how this could be affecting your site. But she still knows where to find a delicious tried and true recipe…Mel’s kitchen cafe!! One of the 100’s of things I really appreciate about your site is your gram measurements!! Thank you!!! And there is discrepancies (for good reasons!) for how many grams is in 1 cup of flour. Your numbers work for me, so however you figured that out…so grateful!!!
Love your blog and the emails and shouted with joy for you when I heard the Jennifer Garner shout out.
Interested to hear how AI has impacted the blog. I use it to search for recipe ideas and then follow the link to a blog. Groceries are too expensive not to take the advice of a tried and true recipe creator and just use AI results.
Also, my son has one year left on his mission and reading about your homecoming experience makes me so giddy. Can’t wait to have home for a few days before he inevitably drives away in my car to connect with his friends and future while coming home for laundry and free food. Love the idea of an air bnb in the mountains.
Hi Mel! You are the go-to expert on food in our extended family! We often talk about your recipes at family dinners. We love and trust them. I’m so sorry for the challenges you face because of AI. For your family, as well as ours, I sincerely hope there is a solution!
Mel, I work 50 hrs a week and I also try my best to be present “domestically”. Your comments about AI and blogging stopped my heart for a second because I don’t know what I’d do without you! I can’t tell you the number of times I have made delicious food, or clicked on a link and purchased something -only to become a hero in my own family for a fabulous find- all because of your leg work! I know I can trust you, I feel like you’re my personal assistant because you have made it your life’s work to test and vet all the things I don’t have time to because of mine. Thank you SO much. I really hope you are able to continue for many years to come.
Hi Mel, I’ve been a long long time follower, sometime commenter, all the time recipe printer. 🙂 Let us know what helps the most (I have no real idea how people make money from clicks) and we will make sure to do it. Gotta shout out my favorite recipes of all time — main dish – “Sweet Balsamic Glazed Pork”… and dessert recipe “Cranberry Coffee Cake with Warm Vanilla Sauce”. If you haven’t tried them, you are missing out! <3
Ugh! I admittedly don’t use AI very often but had no idea what it was doing to your business and other recipes bloggers! 😱😥
Definitely don’t want to live without you. Love your recipes and emails.
Love your realness and recommendations.
Love and wishes!
Pa don’t leave us!
and very cool shoutouts from Jen and Elin! ♥️⭐️
I’ve been coming to your site for wonderful meals for 15+ years and hope that I can continue to in the future. My teenage sons have started cooking more this summer and I sent them to your site to answer the “what’s for dinner” question. We’ve also enjoyed many of your game recommendations! Enjoy the rest of the summer ♥️
I’m so grateful for your blog and cooking “voice” in my world! My three sisters just received your cookbook (as a gift from yours truly!), and they’re loving it, as expected! It’s really just you and smitten kitchen in my life, and I’m bookmarking most of her recipes for when I’m an empty nester and decide to go vegan. 🙂
Will always love your voice and your Friday thoughts! Thanks for sharing Mel! Optimistic about the AI/ human content coming into a better balance. We need each other! We will figure out good solutions to reigning in our use of AI in p be a helpful and less hurtful tool but I’m sure we’ll see a lot of failure as we all work it out together.
Thanks for many years of great recipes and real life talk!
Mel, I have been following you for over 10 years and your blog is THE BEST. I know I am just one person but whatever I can do to help your blog continue, I will do! I purposefully do not google recipes…I go to your website and search there. You’re right, so many AI recipes are slop! I do think AI is a “big boom trend” right now, and although it certainly isn’t going to go away, I have hope that most of the time, people want people. And that perhaps, like we are now realizing with smartphones and how addicting they are, we will realize that AI needs to be used in a very limited, careful way.
It always gives me comfort to remember in my own endeavors: it’s not up to me. This is God’s website, and if He wants it to continue, He will give you whatever resources you need to make that happen. AI can’t compete with our Lord 🙂 I hope that gives you some comfort and takes some of the burden off your shoulders!
Loved checking out your game ideas. Our new favorite is mantis. You can get it on Amazon but I found cheaper at Walmart.com
I didn’t realize how much AI is affecting your business. If I’m looking for a recipe I always go straight to your site.
Thanks so much for sharing all of this!!!! I always search for your recipes specifically- just like someone below commented, I also search “Mel’s cookies” or “Mel’s pasta casserole” whenever I’m looking for a specific recipe. Agreed that AI is something else.. it’s really hard for me personally to figured which is real and AI when I’m watching reels sometimes so now I basically stay off social media and Reddit bc AI has ruined my fun stuff like that, though I do still use it too for various random things. I’m so sorry it has affected your blog in a negative way. I will also try to send specific links and comment and rate recipes more too. My whole family knows your my favorite blogger as well!!! Yay Jennifer Garner!!!
I hope you keep blogging for a long time because I love reading your emails and posts and trying new things!!! But also you are supported and loved by me and so many who don’t know you personally, so just know either way you’re the best!!!
I’ve been a longtime follower, and I am thankful for your blog and recipes! Honestly, whenever I search with AI, no matter the topic, I always ask for sources and go straight to the source to get the actual information I am looking for. And as for recipes, I do not use AI for that. Obviously, AI is a part of the search engines on the internet now, but I wouldn’t use a recipe that AI created. I would go to the website/blog that the search directs me to. And I don’t even use just any old blog from an internet search. Once in a while, I try a new recipe from a new blog, but if it doesn’t turn out, I won’t go back there. I have my list of blogs that give me recipes that most always turn out good, if not great. Yours is one of them. Please do let us know if there is anything we can do to help keep your blog at the top!
